Colleges and
Vocational Schools:
Purdue University
Located in West Lafayette, Purdue enrolled
over 38,000 students in 2005-06. Purdue is a
land-grant college, created by the Morrill Act signed by President
Lincoln on July 2, 1862. By this act, the federal government offered
public land to any state which would use the proceeds from the sale
of the land to establish & maintain a college to teach agriculture &
mechanic arts.
Ivy Tech State College
Ivy Tech State College is a state-assisted
college which offers vocational training to the residents of
Indiana. Programs are offered in business, health, and
trade-technical areas. Numerous options are available in each of
three divisions: a one-year technical certificate, a two-year
associate's degree or classes for upgrading or learning new skills.
The Community College of Indiana offers associate
degrees in liberal arts through Ivy Tech State College in
collaboration with Vincennes University.
Indiana Business College is an accredited member of the
Association of Independent Colleges and Schools. Programs are
offered in accounting, business management, fashion merchandising,
hospitality, secretarial, etc. IBC also offers associate degrees.
The St. Elizabeth School of Nursing offers a three-year
diploma program with an optional B.S.N. Program.
Lafayette Beauty Academy and
Christina & Co. are the area's Beauty Schools.
School
Corporations:
A student living in Tippecanoe County may
be enrolled in one of four school corporations ¾ The Lafayette
School Corporation, Tippecanoe School Corporation, West Lafayette
Community School Corporation, or the Private Schools.
The largest corporation is Tippecanoe with
10,091students enrolled in its nine elementary schools, six middle
schools and two high schools. The Lafayette School Corporation, with
eleven elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school
enrolls 7,203 students followed by West Lafayette with 1,981
students in its two elementary schools, one junior high and one high
school. Lafayette Catholic Schools serve 858 students.
