Area High School Students Available for Employment Through ICE Program.

ICE is a yearlong elective for seniors who want to participate in a career exploration program. The program is available and designed for students in all diploma pathways whose career goals include college/university, the military, or the workforce after graduation. There are two components to ICE: the class and the workplace component. Students earn three (3) credits per semester, six (6) credits for the year, and the opportunity to earn additional ICE credit(s) during the summer.

While most students work in the afternoons, a few students may work in the mornings and arrive at Harrison for the last four or five classes of the day. This is a wonderful and unique opportunity for students who desire career exploration and preparation before graduation. It also provides the opportunity for students to apply the academics learned in school in the workplace.

Workplace settings are identified and selected based on the student's individual career goal. ICE students have been employed in each of the major career clusters represented throughout Indiana and the nation, and include:

Agriculture, Food, & Natural Resources                      Architecture

Arts, A/V Technology & Communications                  Business & Finance
Government & Public Administration                           Science, Technology & Engineering
            Hospitality & Tourism                                                Human Services
Law, Public Safety & Security                                    Information Technology
Transportation & Distribution                                      Marketing, Sales & Services
            Health Science                                                           Manufacturing

There are minimal requirements from the employers, but each is essential for the success of the program.  State guidelines require supervisors to employ the students for a minimum of 15 hours per week.  Additional hours, may be assigned to an ICE student, with flexibility allotted for those students who wish to participate in school-related activities. Participating employers are encouraged to communicate with the ICE coordinator as concerns arise.  The coordinator can provide additional support to both the employer and the student in obtaining successful employment experiences.  Employers are also asked to fill out an ICE evaluation each quarter for on-the-job student/employee performance.  The final expectations of the employer are that Workman’s Compensation Insurance be provided as well as any necessary safety training.
