The area is home to over 300 manufacturing firms, which include such
fields as: robotics, biotechnology, food processing,
microelectronics, instrumentation and office/clerical industries.
There is also an ample labor pool in the area. All levels of skilled
workers are available, largely due to the area's excellent
educational and job-training institutions. Lafayette is
strategically located for businesses as well, with 80 percent of the
top U.S. markets within a day's delivery time.
Lafayette - West Lafayette residents enjoy an excellent standard of
living. This, coupled with low food prices, property taxes, and
insurance costs, creates an upwardly mobile population.
Lafayette was named the top city in Indiana to reside in and was
also named Community of the Year by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce
in 2001. Money magazine ranked Lafayette number two on its June 1998
listing of the top Midwest small cities in the United States in
which to live and Industry Week's April 1998 issue also listed
Lafayette 21st out of 300 in the ranking of industry friendly
communities.
Arts and Attractions
Whether it's visiting a museum, joining an arts organization or
attending a musical performance, area residents have many
opportunities to get involved with the arts. With over 100
organizations, there is something for everyone. For more information

Purdue University, located in West Lafayette, offers an abundance of
entertainment throughout the year. It's the site for many activities
including concerts, plays, art exhibits, cultural events, and is
home to the Elliott Hall of Music. The Long Center for the
Performing Arts is located in Lafayette and offers a variety of
special events throughout the year as well.
Fort Ouiatenon, a park in West Lafayette, was the site of the first
European settlement in Indiana. It is also the location of the
yearly Feast of the Hunter's Moon, the recreation of an 18th Century
French and Indian encampment on the banks of the Wabash River, which

Another special event is the Indiana Fiddlers Gathering, held in
midsummer. This regional festival at the Tippecanoe Battlefield
attracts traditional, folk, and country musicians from across the
United States.
Wolf Park, in Battle Ground, a unique wildlife park where wolf
behavior is observed, is also open to the public. Other animals can
be seen at Columbian Park and Zoo. The park is 63 acres of fun
featuring an aquatic center, zoo, amusement rides, recreational
stadium, outdoor theater, concession stands, shelter houses and many
picnic areas.
The Art Museum of Greater Lafayette shows a permanent collection of
work along with major national traveling exhibits in the East
Gallery. The Tippecanoe County Historical Museum displays artifacts
depicting the county's history from prehistoric times to the
present, including Indian, Pioneer, Victorian and 20th Century
exhibits. The Tippecanoe Battlefield Historical Museum traces the
causes and effects of the Battle of Tippecanoe.
Over 30 parks are found in the area, offering basketball and tennis
courts, baseball, ice skating, softball diamonds, soccer fields,
hiking trails, picnic tables, playground equipment, swimming pools,
sled runs and more. Boating and canoeing are also possible on the
Wildcat Creek, Tippecanoe & Wabash Rivers.
Central Indiana and the Lafayette - West Lafayette area have many
waterways that provide habitats for most every species of game fish
for fishermen. For the golfer, there are a dozen courses in the
Lafayette - West Lafayette area including two country club courses.

Education
Purdue University
Located in West Lafayette, Purdue enrolled over
38,000 students in 2003-04. Purdue is a land-grant college, created
by the Morrill Act signed by President Lincoln on July 2, 1862. By
this act, the federal government offered public land to any state
which would use the proceeds from the sale of the land to establish
& maintain a college to teach agriculture & mechanic arts.
Ivy Tech State College
Ivy Tech State College is a state-assisted college which offers
vocational training to the residents of Indiana. Programs are
offered in business, health, and trade-technical areas. Numerous
options are available in each of three divisions: a one-year
technical certificate, a two-year associate's degree or classes for
upgrading or learning new skills.
The Community College of Indiana offers associate degrees in liberal
arts through Ivy Tech State College in collaboration with Vincennes
University.
Vocational Schools
Indiana Business College is an accredited member of the Association
of Independent Colleges and Schools. Programs are offered in
accounting, business management, fashion merchandising, hospitality,
secretarial,etc. IBC also offers associate degrees.
The St. Elizabeth School of Nursing offers a three-year diploma
program with an optional B.S.N. Program.
Lafayette Beauty Academy and Christina & Co. are the area's Beauty
Schools.

School Corporation, or the Private Schools.
The largest corporation is Tippecanoe with 10,091students enrolled
in its nine elementary schools, six middle schools and two high
schools. The Lafayette School Corporation, with eleven elementary
schools, two middle schools, and one high school enrolls 7,203
students followed by West Lafayette with 1,981 students in its two
elementary schools, one junior high and one high school. Lafayette
Catholic Schools serve 858 students.

Government
Lafayette, a Class II city, and West Lafayette, a Class III city,
are separate governmental units. Lafayette's government consists of
an elected Mayor, nine elected City Council members and a City
Clerk, all of whom serve four-year terms. In 2003, there were 575
full-time employees. The annual budget was $51,000,000.
West Lafayette's government consists of an elected Mayor, seven
elected City Council members, a City Judge, and a Clerk-Treasurer.
In 2003, there were 180 full-time employees and the annual budget
was $15,300,000.
The elected officials of Tippecanoe County include three County
Commissioners, seven members of the County Council, seven judges, an
Auditor, Treasurer, Recorder, Assessor, Surveyor, Clerk, Coroner,
Prosecutor, and Sheriff.
United States citizens who live in Tippecanoe County and will be 18
years old by the next general election are eligible to register to
vote. There is no waiting period for new residents. Registration in
the Courthouse closes 29 days before an election; outside the
Courthouse, 44 days before an election. Registration reopens May 15,
after a primary, and December 1, after a general election.
UTILITIES
Cable television is provided to all of Lafayette, West Lafayette,
and many rural areas by Insight Communications. Information for a
hook-up can be taken over the telephone, 447-6886, or by visiting
the office at 325 South Creasy Lane. Installation is usually within
three days after ordering.
Telephone service in Lafayette, West Lafayette, and some of the
surrounding rural areas is provided by Verizon. Other rural areas
are served by private companies. Service may also be started by
calling 1-800-483-1000.
Persons living within Lafayette or West Lafayette city limits will
be served by the city trash pick-up. In West Lafayette, contact the
Street Department at 705 South River Road, 775-5242. In Lafayette,
call the Street Department located at 260 South Third Street,
476-4567. Outside the city limits, call Waste Management of
Lafayette, 2120 Wabash Avenue, 474-4432 and Refuse Handling
Services, 1-800-480-3902.
Vectren Energy Delivery serves all of Tippecanoe County. Most new
applications can be completed over the telephone, 1-800-777-2060, or
by stopping by the office at 1250 South Creasy Lane.
Electricity is provided by Cinergy/PSI and Tipmont REMC. Cinergy
serves Lafayette, West Lafayette, and most of the small towns, while
Tipmont primarily serves rural areas. The Cinergy number is
1-800-521-2232. New Tipmont customers can apply for service in
person or by phone. Their office is located in Linden, 15 miles
south of Lafayette on US 231. The phone number is 1-800-726-3953.
Turning on the water in Lafayette requires a visit to the Lafayette
Water Works office at City Hall. City Hall is located at 20 N. Sixth
Street in downtown Lafayette. The number is 476-4488. In West
Lafayette, water service is provided by Indiana-American Water
Company, Inc. a privately owned company. New applications can be
taken by the telephone, 1-800-492-8373. |
